The Subclass 407 Training visa allows people outside Australia to participate in structured, workplace-based occupational training activities in Australia. The purpose of the training must be to improve the applicant's skills in their current occupation, area of tertiary study, or field of expertise — or to participate in a professional development program.

The Subclass 407 is a sponsored visa: the Australian host organisation must be an approved temporary activities sponsor. The sponsor nominates the training activity and the visa applicant. The training must be genuine workplace-based training, not disguised employment. The holder cannot be doing the work of an Australian employee — they are in Australia to develop skills, not to fill a labour market gap.

The applicant must be nominated by an approved temporary activities sponsor for one of the following occupational training types:

• Occupational training to improve skills — structured workplace training to enhance the applicant's skills in their current occupation or area of study, typically where equivalent training is not available in the home country
• Occupational training for capacity building overseas — training to improve skills that will be used to benefit a developing country; the applicant must intend to return to their home country after training
• Professional development training — structured training activities run by an Australian organisation for the development of skills relevant to the profession

General eligibility requirements:

• Nominated by an approved temporary activities sponsor
• The proposed training activity is genuine and meets one of the above occupational training types
• Health and character requirements met
• Genuine intention to stay temporarily

The Department assesses whether the training is genuine and not a front for filling an employment role. Where the training involves the applicant performing tasks that contribute to the sponsor's productive output in a way indistinguishable from regular employment, the Department may refuse on the basis that the proposed activity is not genuine training.

The sponsoring organisation must first be an approved temporary activities sponsor or apply for approval. The sponsor then lodges a nomination for the training activity, specifying the training type, the proposed training plan, and the supervisor arrangements.

The visa applicant lodges the visa application online through ImmiAccount, providing:

• Evidence of the approved sponsorship and nomination
• A training plan specifying the activities, schedule, and supervisor
• Evidence of the applicant's current occupation, qualifications, or expertise relevant to the proposed training
• Health and character documents as required

Subclass 407 holders are subject to the following standard conditions:

• Condition 8108 — Work only in the nominated training activity; must not work for the sponsor in any capacity other than the approved training
• Condition 8503 — No further stay (commonly imposed; prevents applying for most visas while in Australia)
• Condition 8201 — Study limitation (if the holder wishes to undertake formal study beyond 3 months, a separate student visa may be required)

The maximum stay is generally up to 2 years, depending on the training plan. The visa may be granted for a shorter period if the training plan is of shorter duration.

The Subclass 407 does not provide a direct pathway to permanent residence. Holders who complete their training and wish to remain in Australia must apply for a different visa (for example, the Subclass 482 if they have a sponsor willing to employ them).
