The Subclass 590 Student Guardian visa allows a parent or suitable guardian to stay in Australia to care for a student who holds a Subclass 500 Student visa and who is under 18 years of age. The guardian may stay in Australia for as long as the student's visa permits. The Subclass 590 does not grant any work rights — the holder may not work in Australia.

The guardian's visa duration is tied to the student's visa. When the student's visa expires, the guardian's visa also expires. If the student obtains a new visa, the guardian may apply for a new Subclass 590.

• The guardian must be a parent, step-parent, grandparent, or a person responsible for the student as approved by the Department
• The student must hold or have applied for a Subclass 500 Student visa and be under 18
• The educational institution must confirm that a guardian is required or appropriate for the student
• Health and character requirements must be satisfied
• Must have adequate funds to support themselves in Australia

Subclass 590 applications are lodged via ImmiAccount. The application requires confirmation from the student's educational institution, proof of relationship to the student, evidence of financial capacity, and health and character documents.

The Subclass 590 holder may not work in Australia (Condition 8101 — no work). The visa is valid for as long as the linked student's visa. Study rights are limited — the guardian may study for up to 3 months in a course that is not a registered course.
