Biometrics
Statutory definition
Sections 12.1 and 12.2 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, SC 2001, c 27, provide for the collection of biometric information from persons applying for visas, permits, or permanent residence. The information collected may be used for identity verification, screening, and enforcement purposes.
Explanation
Biometrics must be provided by most visitors, students, and workers applying from outside Canada, and by most permanent residence applicants. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are exempt. Biometrics collected for one application remain on file for ten years and can be reused for subsequent applications during that period.
Biometrics are collected at Visa Application Centres (VACs) overseas or at CBSA offices in Canada. After providing biometrics, the applicant receives a biometrics confirmation letter. Failure to provide biometrics results in the application being refused.
How this term is used
Biometrics must be provided before the application can proceed. The instruction to provide biometrics is typically sent after the initial application is submitted. Applicants should check the current list of countries where biometric collection is required, as nationals of some countries (including US citizens) are exempt.
