Student Direct Stream (SDS)
Statutory definition
The SDS was an IRCC administrative fast-track for study permit applications from eligible countries, discontinued on 8 November 2024. While it operated, applicants had to: be a citizen of an eligible country; have a letter of acceptance from a DLI; have paid the first year of tuition; have an upfront medical exam; have a GIC of at least $10,000 CAD from a participating financial institution; have an IELTS (G) score of 6.0 in each band (or equivalent); and meet all other study permit requirements.
Explanation
The SDS reduces processing time to approximately 20 calendar days (vs. several months for standard applications). The upfront requirements are more demanding but the faster processing makes planning easier. The GIC requirement is a form of proof of funds — the $10,000 is invested in a guaranteed investment certificate that provides monthly living expense disbursements to the student after arrival. Countries eligible for SDS include India, China, Philippines, and over a dozen others. SDS applicants cannot apply if they need a TRV unless the TRV requirement is met simultaneously.
