The Subclass 040 Bridging Visa D (BVD) — Prospective Applicant is a short-duration bridging visa granted to a person who intends to lodge a substantive visa application but has not yet done so. It provides a very brief period of lawful status — typically 5 days — to give the person the opportunity to finalise and lodge their application before becoming unlawful.

The Subclass 040 BVD is uncommon in practice. It is most relevant where a person's current visa is about to expire or has just expired and the person cannot immediately lodge the substantive application. It acts as a very short bridge to the substantive application lodgement, after which a BVA or BVC will be granted.

The BVD carries condition 8101 (no work) and does not carry travel rights. It is not a general-purpose bridging visa — it is specifically for the narrow window before the substantive application is lodged.
