Regulation 210 — Study permits — conditions
Text of provision
The student class is prescribed as a class of persons who may become temporary residents.
Plain English
Regulation 210 provides the conditions attached to a study permit: the holder must be enrolled at a DLI as a full-time student (unless permitted to study part-time due to a final semester exception or medical condition); must pursue the authorised program of study; must leave Canada when the permit expires; and must not work off-campus more than the authorised hours.
The off-campus work authorisation is now set at 24 hours per week during academic sessions (increased from 20 hours in regulations effective November 2024).
Practical effect
Conditions on study permits are enforced. A student who drops to part-time status without authorisation, changes programs or institutions without updating their study permit, or works more than the authorised hours is in violation of their permit conditions. Violations of study permit conditions can affect future immigration applications, including the PGWP eligibility. Maintaining good immigration standing during studies is critical for students who intend to use the PGWP pathway to permanent residence.
