The Subclass 804 Aged Parent visa is a permanent residence visa for parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens, where the parent is of pensionable age (65 years or the Australian age pension age). The applicant must be in Australia both at the time of application and at the time of grant. Like the Subclass 103, the Subclass 804 does not carry a contributory charge and has an extremely long queue wait. The balance of family test applies.

The key distinction from the Subclass 103 is that the Subclass 804 is an onshore visa — the applicant must already be physically in Australia. Parents who are outside Australia and of pensionable age apply through the offshore contributory aged parent pathway (Subclass 864 or Subclass 884).

While waiting, applicants typically hold a bridging visa that allows them to remain in Australia lawfully. The Subclass 864 Contributory Aged Parent (Permanent) provides a faster (but more expensive) alternative.

The Subclass 804 is a permanent residence visa. After grant, the holder has unlimited work and study rights and may live anywhere in Australia. Standard 5-year travel facility applies from grant date.
