Subclass 864 — Contributory Aged Parent Visa — immi.wiki

The Subclass 864 Contributory Aged Parent visa is the onshore permanent residence visa for parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, and eligible New Zealand citizens who are of pensionable age (65 years or the Australian age pension age) and are already in Australia. The Subclass 864 carries a substantial second instalment charge (approximately AUD 43,600 per main applicant as at 2025–26) but has a significantly shorter queue than the non-contributory Subclass 804.

The offshore equivalent is the Subclass 143 (for parents under pensionable age) or there is no offshore aged parent contributory visa — parents of pensionable age outside Australia applying via the contributory pathway use the Subclass 864 (onshore) or the Subclass 884 (temporary, then 864).

• The applicant must be the parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
• The applicant must be of pensionable age at time of application
• The applicant must be in Australia at time of application and at time of grant
• Balance of family test: at least half of the applicant's children must be Australian citizens, PRs, or eligible NZ citizens settled in Australia
• Health and character requirements must be satisfied
• The second instalment charge is payable before grant

Applications are lodged onshore via ImmiAccount. A first instalment is paid at lodgement. When the Department is ready to finalise the application, a second instalment charge is requested and must be paid before the visa is granted. While waiting, applicants hold a bridging visa.

The Subclass 864 is a permanent residence visa. After grant, the holder has unlimited work and study rights and may live anywhere in Australia. Standard 5-year travel facility applies from grant date.
