The Subclass 884 Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa is a 2-year onshore temporary visa for parents of pensionable age. It functions as the first stage of a two-step pathway to permanent residence via the Subclass 864 Contributory Aged Parent (Permanent) visa. Like the Subclass 173 for non-aged parents, the Subclass 884 spreads the cost of the contributory pathway across two applications rather than requiring the full second instalment charge at once.

The applicant must be of pensionable age and must be in Australia at both the time of application and the time of grant.

Applications are lodged onshore via ImmiAccount. After the Subclass 884 is granted, the holder may apply for the Subclass 864 permanent visa, at which point the second instalment charge is required. The 884 holder remains on a bridging visa if the 884 expires before the 864 is granted.

The Subclass 884 is a temporary visa valid for 2 years from grant. The holder has full work and study rights. To obtain permanent residence, the holder must apply for the Subclass 864 before the 884 expires.
